Service, repair and cleaning
This weekend the drillers have been servicing and repairing the coupling to the depth encoder and the deep drill winch, all in an effort to have a nicely working setup for the rest of the season. In the process of servicing equipment it was realized that the bore hole filter had a wrong top went, making it inefficient at filtering the bore hole. Hence the vent was changed and a major cleaning operation of the bore hole commenced (so far 7 full filter runs). Filtering will continue until the liquid in the bore hole is cleaned from chips.
Otherwise we had a short lived period of snow and windy conditions during Saturday evening and night, so it was nice to be indoors having our Saturday dinner and party. Bent, Karl-Emil, Marius and Søren prepared excellent hot-dogs for us. Sunday, Gonzalo and Andrew prepared pizza to order, kindly served by Andrew here at the “EGRIP restaurant”.
On the surface and in the trenches planned scientific work continued, and after the wind died down Chris made further preparations of the skiway and a bit of cleaning up in camp.
What we did today:
- Major service and oiling of deep winch.
- Repair of encoder coupling.
- Exchange of top-vent in bore hole filter.
- Deep drilling core length at 19.00 Sunday: 8.20 m.
- Logging depth at 19.00 Sunday: 669.32 m.
- Filtering of bore hole commenced.
- Finished up drilling with AWI system: 72.2 m to 85.0 m.
- Water vapour, methane, aerosols, snow and boundary layer measurements
- Physical properties measurements.
- Water isotope sampling for sublimation studies.
- Preparing/cleaning skiway and camp for before/after windy conditions.
Weather: Sunny start Saturday, but cloudy with some snow showers from mid-day to midnight. Again sunny all Sunday. Wind from SW turning 360 degrees through W, N, E and S back to SV Sunday, gusting up to 12 m/s, drifting snow. Temperature between -19°C and -7°C.
