From white to blue sky

Saturday 11th of June 2016

All camp participants in front of main dome

Fortunately, the wind speed came down during the night, so we now have better outdoor working conditions. In the morning, we had ground fog, however, so the Twin-Otter was grounded. After lunch, the Twin-Otter went with Nettles team north of EGRIP to pick up the last seismic station. The site needs a revisit before the program can close.

In the drill trench, the first two beams were laid out for the drill tower support. This part needs a lot of attention as it provides the foundation for the entire deep drill set-up.

On the surface, drift snow was removed and there was full activity in Swiss camp and in the water vapour tent, next to which a sampling tower was raised. In the clean snow area, the snow height  was measured at the 200 bamboo poles set up earlier this season. Later 58 surface snow samples were picked up along a profile the Norwegian way - on skies.

Jan spend most of the last 24h in the kitchen preparing a multi-course gourmet dinner. A shame the Michelin guide does not cover the Greenland ice sheet.

What we have done today:

  1. Placed first two beams for drill tower support in drill trench
  2. One Twin-Otter mission today picking up seismic station NE-6
  3. Melted casing into borehole at Swiss drill test site.
  4. Raised tower and set up snow height lasers for the surface processes program
  5. Measured snow heights in Bamboo forest
  6. Sampled snow surface profile in the clean snow area
  7. Removed drift snow from yesterday’s blizzard
  8. Started setting up shelves in the back of carpenters garage
  9. Enjoyed excellent Saturday night gourmet dinner prepared by Jan

Weather today: Overcast, ground fog and light snowfall in the morning. During the afternoon, it cleared up and the sky became blue again. Temp. -9 °C to -18 °C. Wind 0 to 14 kt starting from NW and turning to S during the evening. The evening turned into a sunny, beautiful Saturday night.
