Second plane on the skiway.

Sunday May 1st 2016

Crew is practicing with the fuel pump.

We were a bit anxious this morning as we received a plane with fuel. The plane carries fuel in its own tanks, which is then pumped from the plane to our tank. We have a professional air craft fuel pump; but the crew manning the system did not have time to practise, so we kept our fingers crossed. Everything went well. After the plane left at 1300 we went about doing many different tasks. As Pistenbully no. 2 was out of the garage, we could reconstruct the floor just as we did in the carpenters garage two days ago.

Also we retrieved all overwintering cargo from the cargo line, and we are beginning to unpack the heavy sleds. It was a special moment as we began to unpack the sled with weatherports. This sled was stowed at NEEM in 2012 and pulled 450 km to EGRIP last year.

What we have done today:

  1. Making our fuel pump system ready to receive fuel.
  2. Reconstructing floor in Mechanics garage.
  3. Received flight from Kangerlussuaq.
  4. Pulling all heavy sleds into camp and closing overwintering cargo line.
  5. Laying out two weatherports for construction.
  6. Removing snow drifts from around garages and main dome.
  7. Computer work on new internet interface for camp.

Ad 3: The flight today was mainly a fuel flight. We received 6120 liter that we pumped from the air plane fuel tanks to our tank. The fuel is to support a small aircraft that will arrive mid-May. We also received some petrol and some carburetor alcohol for camp, and finally our new backup generator (45 kW) arrived as well.

Weather today: A few thin clouds in the morning otherwise sunny and clear. Temp. – 12 °C to -30 °C, Wind calm to 5 kt from SW.  Visibility: To horizon.
